A hash is a fingerprint of the exact contents. The same contents and algorithm produce the same hash. Choose a file to check its original bytes; text is read as UTF-8, including spaces and line breaks.
How do I check a downloaded file?
Select File, choose your download, and select the algorithm named by its publisher. Paste their checksum under Compare with an expected hash, then generate. If they differ, check the algorithm and copied checksum before downloading the file again. A match confirms the checksum; it does not prove that a file is safe to open.
Which algorithm should I choose?
SHA-256 is the default. When checking a published hash, choose the algorithm it uses. SHA-1 and MD5 are included for compatibility with old checksums; do not use them for new security designs.
Can a hash be decoded or used to store passwords?
Hashing is not encryption and has no decode operation. A plain SHA hash is not suitable for storing account passwords. Use a dedicated password-hashing scheme for that purpose.
Are files uploaded?
No. Files are read and hashed on your device. Files are read in small pieces, so larger downloads do not need to fit in memory. Keep the tab open while hashing; you can cancel at any time. Jobs stop after ten minutes to recover from a stalled read. Text is limited to 1,000,000 characters. File names and dates are not part of the hash.
