How to play Minesweeper
- Reveal squares without hitting a mine. A number tells you how many mines touch that square, including diagonals.
- Choose Flag to mark a suspected mine, then switch back to Reveal to keep opening squares. On a phone, hold a square to flag it without switching modes. On a computer, right-click to place or remove a flag.
- Once a number has the right number of flags around it, select it again to open its other neighbors. Incorrect flags can cause you to hit a mine.
Is the first square safe?
Yes. The first square you reveal and all its neighbors are free of mines. Later moves can still require a guess; these are randomly arranged boards, not guaranteed no-guess puzzles.
What are the board sizes?
Easy has 9 × 9 squares and 10 mines. Medium has 12 × 12 squares and 24 mines. Hard has 16 × 16 squares and 40 mines. On a phone, swipe across larger boards to keep each square easy to tap.
How do I win?
Reveal every square that does not contain a mine. Flags help you keep track, but you do not have to flag every mine to win. Hitting a mine ends the game and shows where the mines were.
Can I use a keyboard?
Arrow keys move between squares. Enter or Space uses the selected Reveal or Flag mode. F places or removes a flag directly. Home and End move to the edges of a row; Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End move to the board’s corners.
Will my game be saved?
Your current game is saved on this device when browser storage is available. Reopening the page lets you resume it. Clearing site data removes that progress. The timer pauses when you leave the tab; New game replaces your current board.
